Academic Development
All subject areas at Sheboygan Christian School are taught through the lens of Christian worldview. Biblical concepts are woven into the curriculum and challenge students to develop their faith and to explore their calling. SCS desires to meet the goals of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for preparing students to be career and college ready. Our curriculum is revised on an ongoing basis to remain consistent with the changing needs of our nation, state and local communities.
Periodic Assessments are used to benchmark student progress toward achievement goals.Three times per year, K-8 uses Aimsweb and NWEA MAP to benchmark progress in literacy and math. Ninth and tenth grades use the Aspire summative tests to measure academic achievement and to predict academic progress for the ACT exam. All juniors take the ACT test to assess college and career readiness.
Through regular, teacher facilitated lessons and discussions, students learn more about their God-given talents and strengths as they consider their vocational calling. The ACP process helps students explore careers, develop learning pathways to obtain their goals, and prepare for post-secondary success.
Readers Workshop is taught at the K-8th grade levels. Grades 3-5 utilize Lucy Calkin’s resource, Units of Study Reading. Readers Workshop follows the gradual release of responsibility model, providing students with large chunks of time to be in the text, reading independently, in book groups, and working one-on-one with the teacher.
Writers Workshop is taught at the K-8th grade levels, utilizing Lucy Calkin’s resource, Units of Study Writing. Writers Workshop follows the gradual release of responsibility model, providing students time within the classroom to develop narrative writing, informational writing, and persuasive writing, along with one-on-one teacher conferencing.
Math curriculum K-5 is implemented using the math resource, Go Math, to address the mathematical standards, the mathematical practices, and high levels of math discourse. Students in grades 6-8 utilize Big Ideas for Pre-Algebra and Algebra preparation.
Bible curriculum at SCS is aligned with the Christian Schools International Bible standards. Through the Bible curriculum students will develop their God-given creative abilities as they reflect Him by striving for excellence and glorifying God.
Science
Science Curriculum at SCS aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards and incorporates weekly STEM activities or lab work from kindergarten through twelfth grade. In the 2016-17 school year, the K-12 Science curriculum team redesigned 8th, 9th and 10th grade science courses to include increased labs, increased physics content, and higher levels of data anaylsis and inquiry-based learning.
Social Studies curriculum leads students to think like historians through the context of Christian worldview. While addressing Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for Social Studies, students explore cause and effect, change and continuity, turning points, and how to look at past, present, and future.
Spanish
Spanish is offered K-12. If students progress through the K-8 Spanish curriculum, they are ready for Spanish II at the high school level. Spanish I, II, III, and IV(AP) are also offered at the high school level.
Physical Education at SCS stresses participation, fitness, skills, knowledge, and proper attitudes. These are developed in the framework of taking care of the body and developing God-given abilities.
Music
Music at SCS focuses on using music for the sole purpose of glorifying God with the gifts and talents that He has given to each student. Through vocal and instrumental opportunities, students are encouraged to strive towards their full, God-given potential as they study music in-depth. They also gain and explore various venues of music, giving them an appreciation of the variety that music has to offer.
Art
Being made in the image of our creative God, students’ creative abilities and talents are a reflection of Him. Students grow in their visual literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving as they create visual art as a form of communication and expression. Students experience a wide variety of tools and materials such as drawing, painting, fiber arts, mixed media, and sculpture as they develop their technical skills. Alongside of art-making, students learn art history and appreciation relating to the various units of study. Since art is meant to be celebrated and shared, you will see artwork on display throughout the school hallways and in local art shows.
Students are given multiple opportunities to express themselves individually or in a group through original speech, interpretive reading, poetry reading, readers’ theater, and play acting, among many others. Student participate in local, regional, and state competitions to hone their presentation skills and develop their confidence in public speaking.
