Alumni Stories: Alison Gartman ’15

What have you been up to since graduation?
Hi everyone! After graduating from Christian High, I attended Trinity Christian College for my bachelors in social work and then the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for my master’s in social work which I just finished in August. I currently am living in Milwaukee and working as a clinical case manager doing a mix of therapy (individual, groups) and case management for individuals who are diagnosed with a mental disorder and have other differing abilities.

What do you love about Sheboygan Christian School?
Sheboygan Christian School is a place I am proud to call one of my homes. The community that it both brought and continues to bring me is special and something that is not experienced by a lot of people. Because of the involvement of students, families, and the community, Christian High allows students to thrive in a holistic way and emphasizes spiritual growth that set a foundation for me and many others going forward.

Describe one of your favorite teachers and tell why he/she is a favorite.
One of my favorite teachers was Mr. D for choir. We got to sing in the locker rooms to practice our harmonies as the sound was incredible, and he allowed me to play piano for the non-acapella songs…I sometimes made up what to play instead of playing the exact sheet music so thanks to Mr. D for allowing me space to be creative:)

In what ways have you grown in your faith as a result of your experience at Sheboygan Christian School?
With the leaders (teachers, staff, coaches, etc) at Christian High continually exemplifying Christ, my faith was able to grow from having Christian role models and classes that taught foundational truths. Christian High prepared me with the knowledge to speak on my faith with others and the desire and implementation of a personal relationship with Christ.

How do you feel that SCS prepared you for graduation, college/career, and life?
As shared before, SCS takes a holistic approach in preparing students for life after high school. I felt prepared entering college and with SCS’s emphasis on serving others, also have been prepared to patiently serve as a social worker. With the smaller class sizes, I had the opportunity to participate in various classes and extracurricular activities that has now given me an idea of where I want to plug my time outside of work.

What sets SCS apart from other schools?
SCS faculty and staff TRULY, TRULY, TRULY care about each student that enters the school doors. They don’t simply do their best to help the students succeed academically, but strive to walk alongside the students in their faith walk, home life, and personal growth. I remember when I went on a missions trip over spring break my junior year and coming back, the teachers didn’t just ask how the trip went and continue on in their day. Many of them asked intentional questions that allowed me space to reflect and share. SCS teachers take time with the students, this setting it apart from other schools.

What would you say to a prospective family considering enrollment at Sheboygan Christian School?
The stability, experience, and preparedness your child will receive at SCS is unmatched. I need to thank my parents more for their willingness to send me to a Christian school as I received support in setting a foundation for my Christian walk as well as have continued to have opportunities due to attending SCS. The teachers/staff continue to care after you graduate and it feels like home every time I walk back into school.

What advice would you give to current SCS students?
Involve yourself in everything (or as much as you can with COVID)! Go to all the games, plays, student council events, concerts, prayers at the pole, service days, and anything else that allows you to be with other students. You will grow lifelong friendships that bring encouragement and support long after you graduate.
