Our Faith In Action
Let me give you an example of the type of education that consistently goes on at SCS making us distinctive. Mr. VanDrunen, our science teacher, collected one day's worth of garbage from our lunchroom. With gloves and noses pinched, his 7th grade science class proceeded to classify the garbage.
This lesson had several levels to it that Mr. V masterfully pulled together. First, the kids learned about classifying. Second, they determined if kids are getting balanced diets (to do this they had to know of what a balanced diet consists). Perhaps most importantly, they needed to decide if proper stewardship of the earth, our resources, and our bodies was visible in our garbage.  To accomplish this they needed to know the Word of God.  And shouldn’t God’s sovereignty be ruling over every ounce of our lives--even our garbage! Of course Mr. V had the foresight to perform this lesson right before Thanksgiving when food was on everyone’s mind.
The best part is that this is what he always does. He integrates faith and learning. It was nothing out of the ordinary for his class and, in fact; it is common throughout our building.
